Our Ethos

Daily Bread is a workers co-operative. Our co-operative is a business that is owned and controlled by its workers, so we are not accountable to outside share holders.

We are committed to providing good, wholesome food at a fair price, avoiding the exploitation of others, including our customers.

We have a long-standing and strong commitment to Fairtrade principles and products. We also are committed to stocking as much organic and local produce as we can, as well as offering a really wide range of gluten free and vegan products. All of our produce is suitable for vegetarians.

Daily Bread originated from a Church Group at St. Peters Church, Weston Favell, Northampton. The founders of the co-operative wished to develop a business that reflected their beliefs. The store opened in October 1980. We continue to try and live up to those original ideals.

The co-operative has a commitment to give away a percentage of its annual turnover to causes outside of the co-operative, with particular reference to educational projects in developing countries. Much of this giving has been distributed through our sister charity Strive (registered charity number 313899). We also support projects in and around the town of Northampton, such as Northampton Soup, and the Hope Centre, which works to relieve poverty and tackle the causes of homelessness.

Our History
This is a work in progress but we wanted to share some of the history about Daily Bread.

We have a long history and here we will attempt to tell you more about that history.

Publish in 1986 'A New Thing' is a history from 1975 to 1985.

for the 25 year mark it was never published officially as it needed more work but 25 years? Crumbs was written.

We hope to publish some photos from those days in the future.

We offer a free delivery service to customers in the Northampton Borough area. Deliveries are on Friday and orders need to be with us by 12 noon on Thursday.

Orders, including online ones, can also be delivered by courier to postal addresses in England, Wales and Scotland.

Daily Bread is  an Independent Workers Co-operative with 36 years of selling wholefoods. Based in Northampton we have strong Social Objectives which define how we run our business from our suppliers and customers to our staff members.

The business is owned and controlled by the people working in it, with no outside shareholders.  We as a Workers co-operative do believe in putting People before Profit.

We aim to provide healthy wholesome food and related products in our shop and online for collection or delivery. We work hard to provide a good service to our customers and competitive prices. We pack a large range of what we sell on the premises in a range of sizes from 100g of pine nuts to 5kg of our famous Golden Granola.

We aim to give a portion of our monetary surplus to local community groups and developing country’s each year, this amount is linked to our turnover/profit and thereby based on the success of Daily Bread.

We try and satisfy special dietary needs with a healthy range of food products,  for vegetarians, vegans coeliacs (gluten free). We also stock a  good range or organic and fairtrade products. To complete the range we stock a range of environmentally friendly cleaning products as well as herbal remedies, cruelty-free body care, and cosmetics. So whether you shop in-store or online we hope you enjoy your experience with us.
