Organic Month – Choose Organic When It Matters
September is Organic Month, a chance to celebrate organic food, farming and products – and to look again at what the organic label really means.
In a world full of long ingredient lists, unfamiliar additives and sometimes confusing environmental claims, organic certification offers something refreshingly straightforward: standards that are independently checked and legally regulated.
When you see a recognised organic symbol on a product, it isn't simply a marketing claim. The product and the way it has been produced must meet strict organic standards.
More Than Just Food
Organic is probably best known when it comes to fruit, vegetables and other foods, but organic standards can also apply to drinks, beauty products, skincare, textiles and many other everyday products.
Choosing organic can mean supporting farming and production methods that place greater emphasis on:
-
Caring for soils and encouraging healthy, fertile farmland
-
Supporting wildlife and biodiversity
-
Restricting the use of artificial pesticides and fertilisers
-
Avoiding genetically modified ingredients
-
Higher standards of animal welfare
-
Using fewer unnecessary additives and processing aids
Organic isn't simply a passing food trend. For many people it is an everyday choice about how food is produced, what goes into the products they use and the type of farming they want to support.
Small Choices Can Make a Difference
You don't have to change everything you buy overnight.
Choosing one or two products organically – perhaps your flour, oats, dried fruit, tea, coffee or vegetables – is a simple way to start.
Each organic purchase helps support the farmers, growers and producers who have committed themselves to meeting recognised organic standards.
At Daily Bread Co-operative, organic food has been part of what we do for many years. You'll find organic choices throughout the shop, including many of our own-packed wholefoods, alongside organic products from suppliers who share similar environmental and ethical values. We sell almost 900 products that are organic.
Organic Month is a good opportunity to explore something new, swap one of your regular products for an organic alternative, or simply find out a little more about where your food comes from.
When it matters, look for the organic certification mark and choose organic.
